Maharashtra State Energy Calculator

The Maharashtra State Energy Calculator (MHSEC) is a data-driven scenario modelling tool designed to support Maharashtra’s twin goals of becoming a trillion-dollar economy and achieving a low-carbon growth. Developed using the India Energy Security Scenarios (IESS) framework which was developed by NITI Aayog, this tool enables the state to explore alternative energy and emissions pathways up to 2050. MHSEC serves as a strategic decision-support platform aligned with Maharashtra’s long-term development vision under Viksit Maharashtra 2047 and the Maharashtra State Action Plan on Climate Change (MH-SAPCC). The tool enables policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders to assess the implications of different sectoral policy choices and technological transitions on the state’s energy system and greenhouse gas emissions.

Methodology of Development

The MHSEC is developed upon the nationally recognized IESS framework, adapted to reflect Maharashtra’s specific economic structure, demographic profile, industrial composition, and development priorities. The modelling framework incorporates GDP growth trajectories, technology adoption, sectoral transitions, and policy targets. National climate and energy goals are translated into state-level trajectories consistent with Maharashtra’s resource plans and development strategies. The modelling framework enables projections of energy demand, supply mix, and emissions under four preset GDP growth settings, while allowing users to select varying levels of decarbonization across key demand sectors.

Key Features and Outputs of MHSEC

MHSEC allows users to analyse policy scenarios across five major sectors: industry, buildings, transport, agriculture, and cooking. The calculator makes projections up to 2050 in the interval of 5 years, including sector-wise energy demand, energy supply mix, per capita energy demand, energy intensity, per capita electricity demand, greenhouse gas emissions, and cost implications of different pathways. The tool also models for four GDP growth settings and estimates potential energy savings from sectoral interventions, allowing users to compare different development pathways.

MHSEC provides a transparent and data-driven framework for analysing Maharashtra’s future energy demand, supply mix, and emissions under different development scenarios. By enabling exploration of sectoral transitions and economic growth pathways up to 2050, the calculator supports a better understanding of how technology choices and policy interventions may shape the state’s long-term energy trajectory.
